MASA President
Superintendent
St. Michael – Albertville Schools
As President of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators and Superintendent of St. Michael-Albertville Public Schools, I am honored to champion public education.
My educational journey began over 50 years ago in a small town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where I experienced firsthand the transformative power of public education. I was fortunate to have inspiring teachers, like my first grade teacher, Ms. Seraphine, and my geometry teacher, Mr. Goulet, who made me feel seen, heard, and valued. They not only fueled my endless curiosity but also taught me the importance of hard work and strong character.
I began my career as a biology and chemistry teacher, and as I advanced from teacher to principal, then to central office leader and superintendent, I was fortunate to have mentors like Dr. Marcia Ziegler and Dr. Jim Behle. They exemplified the power of relationships and led with heart, shaping my own leadership journey. Reflecting on the profound impact these outstanding public school educators had on my journey, I am more committed than ever to the mission of public education.
Public schools are the foundation of strong communities, providing equitable education for all students while nurturing their academic, social, and emotional growth. They are the great connector—uniting students, staff, families, businesses, and civic organizations—to accelerate growth, enrich learning, and create endless opportunities for student success in an ever-evolving world. They help shape a brighter future for our communities, state, and nation.
Beyond education, public schools drive economic growth and civic engagement. By investing in students, we not only prepare the next generation but also cultivate leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers who will shape our communities. Public schools instill values like responsibility, collaboration, and service, ensuring that young people develop the critical thinking skills, resilience, and adaptability needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. A well-educated society strengthens democracy by fostering civic engagement, encouraging diverse perspectives, and empowering individuals to participate actively in their communities. When we support public education, we invest in a stronger, more prosperous future for everyone.
At STMA, we wholeheartedly embrace public education. We take great pride in placing students at the center of everything we do. Through collaboration, we cultivate safe, welcoming, and respectful environments that inspire curiosity and ignite passion. As the great equalizer, we believe public education empowers every learner—regardless of background, ability, or circumstance—with access to high-quality learning experiences and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
To celebrate and advocate for public schools, we invited our staff to share why they chose to work in a public school at STMA. Click here to read their inspiring stories. Our administrators also reflected on their dedication to public education—see the graphic for their “whys.” These heartfelt messages were shared with families and staff through our monthly newsletter and district social media platforms.
As we recently celebrated Public Schools Week, now—more than ever in today’s turbulent and uncertain landscape—is the time to stand united as fierce champions of public education. Our collective voice matters, and our advocacy is essential. We must support our educators, uplift our students, and work in partnership with families, communities, and state leaders to ensure every learner has the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Now is the time to engage, to advocate, and to take action—whether by sharing success stories, encouraging investment in public education, or fostering meaningful conversations about the future of our schools. We are stronger together, and our students deserve nothing less.
Strong public schools are the heart of our communities and the foundation of a strong Minnesota. They ensure that every learner who walks through our schoolhouse doors has access to a high-quality education, along with the support and resources needed to thrive. By celebrating individuality, fostering inclusivity, and empowering students to succeed, public schools shape the future. Public education is the cornerstone of democracy, and when we invest in it, we invest in our future.
