Dr. Paul Fochtman, now Head of School (Superintendent) at Frankfurt International School in Germany, has recently received the highly esteemed 2018 International Superintendent Award presented by the Association for the Advancement of International Education. This is the premier organization for international school leadership. The award is given annually to a single Head of School who has exemplified outstanding leadership and service among international schools worldwide.
Dr. Fochtman grew up in Michigan attending Hackett Prep School in Kalamazoo before earning a degree in business and economics at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania. After college, he began his career in pharmaceutical sales, but later found his vocation in education while working for the Department of Defense in Guam. He pursued a Masters in Education there at the University of Guam. Afterwards, Dr. Fochtman went on to get his doctorate at the University of Minnesota where his research project into the learning differences between male and female students was included in a best-seller book, A Fine Young Man.
Over the course of his career in international education, Dr. Fochtman has led schools in the United States, Guam and Germany, but also American Embassy and Consulate schools in New Delhi and Mumbai.
Dr. Fochtman has received many honors, most notably as the recipient of a Guam Senate Resolution for his service to education, the U.S. State Department Principal of the Year Award in 2002, and a Columbia University Klingenstein Fellowship in 2016. Dr. Fochtman will be recognized at the United Nations in February, before presenting to other leaders in education in New York City. He will attend a Washington D.C. special recognition event later in the year.
