AASA President
As your AASA President, I want to share a brief update on recent federal developments that may impact school leaders across the country, including here in Minnesota.
Federal Budget Proposals & State-Level Impacts
House committees are moving forward with proposals in the reconciliation process that could have major implications for state budgets. Specifically, several initiatives may shift costs from the federal government to individual states. For Minnesota, this could mean our state legislature must choose between absorbing new obligations or reducing state education funding to manage the financial burden. This reinforces the need for sustained advocacy to protect investments in public education.
Vouchers on the Federal Agenda
Another emerging concern is a significant federal school voucher proposal, which, while not currently active in Minnesota, could influence policy discussions in future legislative sessions. AASA remains committed to opposing efforts that divert public funds to private institutions at the expense of our public school students.
Mental Health Grant Funding

If your district has received federal grant funding for mental health initiatives, we encourage you to reach out to AASA staff to verify whether your funding may be affected by recent budget actions. Protecting student mental health support remains a top priority for AASA, and we are tracking this issue closely.

Advocacy Conference in July

Looking ahead, AASA will host its Annual Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., this July. We are proud to have strong Minnesota representation, including Governing Board members Craig Oftedahl, Lisa Sayles Adams, Scott Monson, and Chris Mills, who will join me as we advocate on behalf of school leaders nationwide.

The Public Education Promise Roadmap

Finally, we’re excited to announce that AASA will formally launch the “Public Education Promise” roadmap in the coming school year. This resource outlines five focus areas designed to guide district-level reflection, goal-setting, and continuous improvement. We anticipate previewing the roadmap at the MASA Fall Conference, and I encourage all of you to take a look and begin thinking about how it aligns with your local priorities.

Thank you for your continued dedication to students, staff, and your communities. Now more than ever, your leadership matters.
Warm regards,
David Law
President, AASA
