Dr. Deb Henton
Executive Director
MASA

As I write this final message, I find myself thinking less about milestones and more about moments. Quiet conversations before meetings. The moment a new leader realizes they are not alone. Check-ins in hallways near conference meeting rooms. Those are the moments that stay with me.

I think often about the pandemic, when there were no easy answers, only difficult decisions. What stood out was how you showed up for one another. You listened, supported, and led with courage and care. In uncertain times, you created connections. That is the strength of this profession and this association.

Over the years, I have seen leadership in its most human form. It is steady, compassionate, and often unseen. I have come to believe this deeply: no one leads alone, and no one should have to.

That is the power of MASA. It is more than an organization. MASA is a community. A place to be honest, to learn, and to find strength in one another. In a profession that can feel isolating, that matters.

Through it all, your commitment to students has remained constant. Programs may change, but the heart of this work, relationships, integrity, and service, endures.

I leave this role with deep gratitude for your trust, your partnership, and the opportunity to walk alongside you. I am also grateful for the many partners who support this work and help strengthen our collective voice.

I have great confidence in what lies ahead. Executive Director Dr. Matt Hillmann, the MASA team, and the Board of Directors will lead with wisdom and care, supported by leaders like you who are thoughtful, resilient, and deeply committed.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of this journey. It has been an honor. And more than that, it has been a privilege I will carry with me always.

Leadership matters,
Deb
