Dr. Deb Henton
Executive Director
MASA

Dear MASA Members,

Summer offers a rare pause in our rhythm—a moment to exhale, to reflect, and maybe, just maybe, to remember why you stepped into this work in the first place.

The truth is, what you do is not just professional. It’s profoundly personal. You lead public schools that serve as the beating hearts of communities across Minnesota. In every decision you make—whether strategic, instructional, or operational—you are shaping the future of our children and, by extension, our state.

At our spring conference, we invited participants to complete the sentence: “To do my part to ensure that Minnesota continues to provide high-quality public education in this critical moment, I will…” What we heard in response was both powerful and deeply encouraging. You committed to keeping students at the center of all decisions, advocating boldly for public education, supporting staff well-being, engaging communities, and ensuring that equity is more than just a word—it’s a lived practice.

These are not small commitments. They reflect the heart of your leadership and the moral compass that guides this profession.

As we look ahead to the next school year, it’s clear that your leadership will continue to be vital. The landscape remains complex—shifting demographics, workforce challenges, political noise, and deep needs among students and staff alike. But if anyone is equipped to lead through complexity with clarity and purpose, it’s you.

MASA is here to support and stand beside you. As you rest this summer and begin to turn your thoughts toward the year ahead, know this: your work matters more than words can capture. And your leadership—quiet or bold, seasoned or new—is essential to the health and future of Minnesota’s public schools.

Thank you for everything you give. We see you, we believe in you, and we are honored to serve you.

With deep gratitude on behalf of the MASA staff,

Deb
